VoL Desk, Sep. 7, 2023: Following the recent judgment by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, which invalidated the entire LAHDC Kargil election process initiated by the UT Ladakh Administration, a fresh election notification has been promptly issued by the UT Administration.

The judgement of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, dated September 6, 2023, in Civil Appeal No. 5707 of 2023 (SLP No. 18727 of 2023), has set aside the entire election process initiated under the notification dated August 2, 2023, issued by the administration of the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh Election Department UT of Ladakh under S.O. 53 published vide No. Secy/Election/2023290-301 dated August 5, 2023.

As a result of this ruling, the Hon’ble Supreme Court has directed that a fresh notification be issued within seven days, calling for elections to constitute the 5th Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil.

The UT of Ladakh, in compliance with the judgment dated September 6, 2023, and as per Rule 12 of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Election Rules 1995, has announced the following key dates and details for the upcoming election:

Date from which nominations can be made: September 9, 2023

Last date for making nominations: September 16, 2023

Date for scrutiny of nominations: September 18, 2023

Last date for the withdrawal of nominations: September 20, 2023

Date on which the poll shall, if necessary, be held: October 4, 2023

Timing of Poll: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Date of Counting: October 8, 2023

Date before which the Election shall be completed: October 11, 2023

It’s important to note that the Model Code of Conduct will come into force from the date of the publication of this notification in the official e-gazette of UT Ladakh. This code of conduct will remain in effect until the election process is completed and will be applicable for the entire Kargil District.

This development marks a crucial moment in the democratic process of Ladakh and signals the beginning of a fresh election process for the 5th Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil.
