UT Administration Establishes Committees to Aid Needy Prisoners in Ladakh
Kargil, August 28: In a significant development, the Union Territory (UT) administration of Ladakh has granted approval for the formation of two committees aimed at providing essential financial support to impoverished prisoners facing difficulties in paying fines and obtaining bail. This groundbreaking initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to ensuring justice and alleviating the burdens faced by vulnerable individuals. The two committees established are the UT Level Oversight Committee and the District-Level Empowered Committee. These bodies will work collaboratively to assess the needs of financially challenged inmates, making it possible for them to secure bail or settle fines.
- Oversight Committee at UT Level: This committee, composed of individuals with diverse expertise, will oversee and guide the overall implementation of the scheme.
- Empowered Committee at District Level: Operating at the grassroots level, the District-Level Empowered Committee will play a crucial role in evaluating the financial requirements of individual cases. By accurately assessing the bail and fine amounts, this committee will determine the necessary financial support to be provided. (DC/DM) will be responsible for authorizing the disbursement of funds from the Central Nodal Account, in accordance with the committee’s decisions.
To facilitate their operations, the committees have been granted the authority to appoint a Nodal Officer. Furthermore, the committees may seek assistance from various stakeholders, including representatives from civil society organizations, social workers, and District Probation Officers. These collaborations will aid in efficiently processing cases and ensuring that deserving prisoners receive the necessary support.
