Prospect of Gurez Valley’s Connection to Kargil via Kaobal Gali Emerges

Kargil, August 15: The picturesque Gurez Valley, situated along the Line of Control and approximately 85 km from Bandipora district headquarters, is poised to receive a significant tourism boost as authorities contemplate reopening the traditional Gurez-Kargil road through Kaobal Gali. This initiative is anticipated to not only enhance tourism but also reestablish age-old connections between the two regions.

With a recent surge in tourist arrivals, the Gurez Valley presents a promising opportunity for local stakeholders to promote their ventures, including homestays and the emergence of new hotels. In an effort to maintain its eco-friendly allure, some local entrepreneurs have introduced tent accommodations.

Nestled amidst lush green landscapes, the valley offers an awe-inspiring view of the Kishanganga River meandering through the region, with the majestic pyramid-shaped Habba Khatoon mountain providing a stunning backdrop.

Simultaneously, local authorities are working on developing new tourist destinations within the valley to showcase its natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The road that historically connected the twin villages of Chakwali and Abdullan in the Tulail region of Gurez to Mushko Valley in Drass, Kargil, via Kaobal (Kabul) Gali had remained closed for security reasons for several decades. The reopening of this road is expected to provide tourists with the opportunity to explore new destinations and landscapes in the region.

Currently, only a limited number of individuals have been able to traverse the road due to its challenging condition.

Local political representatives believe that this initiative will not only rejuvenate traditional trade practices but also bridge the gap between regions that have long shared cultural and linguistic affinities.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Bandipora, Owais Ahmad, mentioned that there is an existing track road connecting Kaobal Gali in Gurez to Drass in Kargil; however, only 4×4 vehicles have been able to navigate it so far.

“We are now considering opening it up for tourists,” Ahmad stated.

He added that the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been taking measures to repair and make the road suitable for travel. While the road may not be accessible year-round, it is anticipated to augment the tourism potential of the region and attract more visitors.

Ahmad emphasized that the potential circuit road could allow tourists to relish the beauty and diversity of Kashmir, enabling travel from Srinagar to Ladakh and Kargil through Chakwali, then to Bandipora via Gurez. This route would encompass attractions like Wular Lake and other scenic spots.

He noted that the road currently has limitations on accessibility, but once repairs are completed and safety is ensured, it will be open to all travelers.

For domestic tourists within Kashmir and those from around the country, no formal permission is required to visit Gurez Valley and its surrounding areas, according to Ahmad.

Raja Aijaz, a member of the District Development Council (DDC) Tulail, expressed his satisfaction with the development and labeled it a long-awaited demand.

“The opening of the Kaobal Gali-Drass road has been a cherished aspiration, and it will not only boost tourism but also facilitate trade and commerce, opening up new avenues for development in both valleys,” Aijaz remarked.

Abdul Raheem Lone, a local resident, indicated that the reopening of the road would rekindle historical ties between the two regions. He recounted that decades ago, the people of Gurez Valley used this route for trade journeys on horses to Ladakh, and its closure had repercussions on both sides.
