Wild Carnivores Rampage at Thovina Village: Over 20 Domestic Animals Dead, Dozens Injured
VoL Desk, July 31: Thovina village in Kargil witnessed a tragic incident as wild carnivores attacked a domestic sheepfold in Mohalla Bardum Thovina at Fuks – Choskam Ree, resulting in the death of more than 20 domestic goats and sheep, with dozens more wounded. The attack occurred last evening, and the villagers discovered the lifeless animals inside the sheepfold early in the morning.
The Thovina Ree (Mountain) region is known to be the habitat of various wild carnivores, including snow leopards, wolves, and red foxes. Unfortunately, this area has become a hotspot for wildlife attacks on domestic animals, leading to significant losses for the locals.
Among the affected animals are the rare species of Purik sheep, which is domestically reared in Suru-Karchy and a few areas of Ladakh. These sheep are an invaluable resource for the region, providing meat, wool, and manure.

Local farmers are now expressing growing disinterest in rearing sheep and goats due to the constant threat posed by wildlife. The farmers cite insufficient shelter, medicine, and financial assistance as major factors impacting their livelihoods.
In the past, almost all households in Ladakh used to raise sheep and goats, but the number of animals being reared has drastically decreased to just 30% due to the escalating frequency of such attacks and mismanagement.
The farmer from Thovina village urges the Ladakh government to promptly develop comprehensive policies to support this vital sector. He emphasizes the need for financial assistance to village shepherds for grazing the animals at designated grazing sites from March to November. Traditionally, Ladakh boasted some of the best grazing rules and methods in villages, but the development of other sectors has severely impacted this crucial industry, necessitating immediate attention from the government.
