NBWL Recommends Study on Wildlife Impact of Infrastructural Projects in Ladakh

VoL Desk, May 16: The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has proposed a study to examine the impact of infrastructural projects on wildlife in Ladakh Union Territory.

During the 72nd meeting of the NBWL’s standing committee on April 25, 2023, an official from the Central government suggested conducting a study on the movement of wildlife in Ladakh, considering the various infrastructural projects taking place in the region.

The suggestion was made when discussing a proposal to divert wildlife land for an infrastructural project. Following deliberation, the committee recommended that the Wildlife Institute of India carry out a study to assess the effects of infrastructural development on wildlife movement in Ladakh.

The NBWL released the meeting’s record note on May 11, 2023. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Central Government, as well as various States and Union Territories.

Ladakh is home to two wildlife sanctuaries, namely Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary and Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary, where diverse wildlife species such as Snow leopards, Tibetan urial sheep (shapo), ibex, marmots, Tibetan argali sheep (nyan), Tibetan gazelles, lynxes, Tibetan antelopes, red foxes, and Tibetan wolves can be found.
