KDA Deliberates Statehood and Sixth Schedule Demands as Central Government Considers Empowering LAHDCs
VoL Desk, May 15: The Kargil Democratic Alliance convened a crucial meeting today at the Tourist Facilitation Centre in Kargil to address the pressing issue of Statehood and Sixth Schedule for Ladakh, according to reliable sources.
After a comprehensive hour-long discussion on the future course of action, the leaders opted against holding a press conference and refrained from engaging with media personnel who sought interviews after the meeting.
The timing of this meeting is significant, as it comes shortly after the Leh Apex Body conducted a similar gathering where they agreed to convene with the Kargil Democratic Alliance to chart a path forward.

It is worth noting that the Central Government is reportedly examining a proposal to grant enhanced authority to the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDCs) of Leh and Kargil. This measure aims to safeguard the region’s land, environment, culture, language, and heritage.
If approved, this move is expected to empower the councils with greater financial and administrative autonomy, enabling them to undertake development initiatives and ensure adequate protection. While a similar proposal was discussed a year ago without fruition, there are strong indications that the Central Government is likely to endorse it this time around.
