VoL Desk, July 21: Department of Environmental Sciences, Govt. Model Degree College Zanskar organized one day practical cum study tour for the students of Environmental Sciences and Environment Impact Assessment Skill course.

According to the programme schedule, students were taken to Haftal Hydroelectric Project at Sani village. JE Mr. Chimba briefed the students about the history, functioning and future prospects of the project.

Later on, the students were acquainted with the working of the machineries deployed on project to have practical knowledge.

The students later on paid visit at two forests site at Tungri, where plantation has made in a large scale by locals with the aid of Forest Department. Students were briefed by the forest officials that how one forest area of around two hectre was afforested under Community Forestry Scheme involving the local people and later it was handed over to the villagers. Whereas, another forest area of around one hectre was afforested exclusively by the forest department.

Further, officials briefed the students about various schemes and their objectives under afforestation programme.

Students had a lively and engaging discussion with the officials of the department and concerned teachers regarding the values associated with the forests.

On their way back to college, students halted at the road construction site to understand the mechanism of road construction and about its pros and cons related to environment. Concerned officials of the NHIDCL briefed the students about the possible negative impacts coming out of the projects and environmental parameters that are going to be affected during the construction and operation phase of the projects.

They were further briefed about the alternatives adopted by project proponent to mitigate the impacts and various environmental protection measures put in place for the management of the environment.
