KARGIL, JUNE 10, 2021: Reflecting on the shortage of water in Lankore and other suburbs of Kargil town Councillor town Haji Mohammad Abass assured to take necessary and speedy action to address the shortage of water issue. He said that the issue was raised with the CEC Kargil who has assured to call a meeting on the matter to bring out a solution for the problem.

On the ongoing project being established under AMRUT, Councillor Town Haji Abass said that the work is already under process and the filtration plant is already established at Bagh Khomeini. He admitted that the contractor for construction of distribution line is a nonlocal have who have some issue with the government. He expected that the issue will be resolved soon in the upcoming meeting.

Pertinent to mention that the above said lift water supply is for domestic use and not for irrigation.

He further said that for construction of lift pump for irrigation is not been sanctioned yet as there is no proper place to install pump to uplift water for Lankore village. A lift irrigation scheme is already sanctioned for Dass and Yokchos. Hoping for early resolution of the issue, he said that the government is looking forward to make a similar plan for Goma Kargil.

On the other side Executive Engineer for Irrigation and Flood Control Mohammad Hassan Lone said that the UT, District and Council administration are serious about resolving the water issues in the district, especially to fight the drought situation this year. The administration is mulling on two projects a long term and a short term.

As an immediate plan to coup up with the current water shortage at Lankore, the administration is working on a project to install solar pumps to lift water to the village. As a permanent solution the administration is looking to install lift water supply pumps in the area from river Suru. A 1.5 crore project for lift irrigation at Dass Dethang is already sanctioned under district plan. Order for procurement of pumps for the Dass project is already placed to the mechanical department.

The Executive Engineer further informed that for Lankore two 25 HP solar pumps will be installed from the drought assistance given by the UT Administration.

A prospective plan of around 50-60 Crore for Goma Kargil is also in pipeline. A preliminary survey for the same will be conducted soon. In the next two-three years the water shortage issues will be resolved one after another. Citing sources on depletion of glaciers year after year, Mohammad Hassan urged to make judicious use of water resources in the district. He urged the public to adopt new technologies and techniques like micro irrigation and drip irrigation to ensure maximum productivity with minimum resources.
